Even before looking back, I knew Kayla had seen me. Not only did the pained look in her eyes mirror her thoughts, but it also took a successful swipe at my heart.

However, Natalie’s presence there barely gave me longer than a minute to move a muscle, much more go after Kayla as she left, the same look in her eyes.

“The evening was twice as fun as I imagined,” Natalie beamed. “Now, I’m not so moody about spending the next six months here!”

As hard as it was to believe, my phone had beeped sometime earlier that afternoon with a message from a strange number, and from there, everything had changed course real fast. Although everything that played out happened in a blur, I would start from the point where I’d decided to meet up with the ‘lost’ representative sent from Crave Tech who had somehow gotten my number and texted me. Company loyalty and responsibility had me grabbing my suit and racing out of the place, leaving me no time to announce my absence to any one of my workers like I usually did. This was a big account and a large company in the area that would get us on the map. They could advertise for us better than anyone out there, and we’d all make money.

Oh, and then there was the consequence of not having my phone charged when I should have.

Not less than an hour later, my mouth was coming unhinged at the sudden realization that the representative, as I’d come to see, was none other than Natalie Hansen. When the tall blonde had discovered me and begun to approach me, it felt like I was eating clouds.

I stuttered for a moment longer than I would have wanted. Not only did my eyes take in the upgraded version of Natalie, but I also felt a calmness I hadn’t expected. Every part of me had gone on pause while my thoughts caught up, and even as it did, one name kept popping up into my head, accompanied by one question.

Kayla. What would Kayla do?

Everyone in high school knew the story, although neither of the girls had opened their mouths to tell it—the story of the bad blood between them. Knowing the type of person Natalie was, there was a higher probability she had been the nexus of the problem. But neither she nor Kayla ever really let out enough information to prove anything.

Kayla’s reaction whenever her ears caught Natalie’s name, or her nose caught a whiff of her perfume did not help my suspicion either. Every time, it felt like the name added gasoline to the spark of fear in her belly. That she was far from inner peace when Natalie was involved was beyond a reasonable doubt.

But the question, which remained unanswered until Natalie transferred to another school, was “What had really happened?”

While that question remained, there was the type of relationship I’d shared with Natalie Hansen. There was no difference between Natalie and me but determination. She was my match in every area but never my superior.
